# Conversations

Manage your visitors' reading experience in a dynamic way

Conversations are a component of Engage that allows you to manage every stage of the visitors' interaction with your website: both before and after they turn into your paid subscribers.\
\
For each meter level (free, metered, or premium), you can create a different set of conversations.

By selecting specific qualifiers for your conversation ([expiration types](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/campaigns/conversations/expiration-types.md) and [filters](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/campaigns/conversations/filters.md)), you determine when and how your visitors enter or exit a particular conversation, as well as join the next one (or – depending on your preferences – rejoin the previous one). This makes conversations an efficient tool for managing your visitors' reading experience.

In terms of the system's structure, conversations precede [actions](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/campaigns/actions.md), which means that actions can exist and be managed only as a part of a particular conversation.

{% hint style="info" %}
Every time the visitors refresh the page or load a new page, Engage is re-checking them against the conversation qualifiers, and, if any matching changes are detected, the updated settings will be applied.
{% endhint %}

To create a new conversation, log into your Engage dashboard, navigate to the [**Campaigns**](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/campaigns.md) tab, and first create a new campaign by clicking **+New** in the top right corner of the **Campaigns** panel. Alternatively, you can select an existing campaign from the adjacent drop-down menu.\
\
Then, determine the conversation's meter level by selecting one of the three tabs at the top of the conversations panel: **Free Conversations**, **Metered Conversations**, or **Premium Conversations:**

Then, click on the green **+New Conversation** button on the top right. This will open a new window, where you will be able to enter the name of your conversation. Enter a **Conversation Code**.

Engage users also have a drop-down menu “Used in Configurations” with the list of Configurations in which the selected Campaign is being used.\
\
After the conversation has been created, you can also edit (rename), save, and delete it:

Last Modified Date and Last Modified By info is visible at the left top end of the Conversation created.

For a clearer overview and management of multiple conversations, you can collapse or expand them by clicking on the arrow icon on the far right of each conversation:

{% hint style="info" %}
Engage store views per Meter Level - Conversation Code. When Conversation Code gets changed, the views get lost. With this field, Engage is able to store Conversation Views to something more persistent/shareable. (Conversation Code is available from version 2.8.3 onwards.)

This will also allow Engage users to, for example, test conversations in different campaigns without losing the Conversation views, being able to come back to the original Conversation, if needed.

This new Conversation Code field should be unique per Campaign.
{% endhint %}

Alternatively, you can select and copy one of the previously created conversations by using the drop-down menu **Copy existing conversation**. Click **Submit** to create the conversation.\
\
After the conversation has been created, you can also edit (rename), save, and delete it:\
