# Working with Engage

How Engage components fit together to create unique expiriences for your visitors

Engage is a powerful paywall solution that is designed to help you turn your website visitors into paid subscribers. It runs as a JavaScript plugin on your website and uses specific data about your visitors to sort them into different categories based on specific rules that you set up. 

You can manage all these settings from your own Engage dashboard using a variety of features that allow you to communicate with your readers through an extensive set of customizable messages (such as paywalls, log-in, and registration forms, banners, newsletter opt-ins, etc.), as well as keep track of their visits, subscriptions, article views, and much more.

## How It Works

The process of identifying your website's visitors consists of several stages. You construct each one of these stages yourself, using Engage [qualifiers](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/qualifiers.md) – specific conditions designed to target your visitors based on various characteristics. Different types of qualifiers are available on each stage, but all of them work based on identical principles and processing logic. In what can be characterized as a general-to-specific approach, Engage uses each subsequent type of qualifiers at each stage to focus on the exact group of visitors that you'd like to target.

All visitors who are accessing your website for the first time are sorted into one of the three [meter levels](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/glossary.md) available in Engage: free, metered, or premium. \

In order to perform this task, Engage needs you to create a set of [meter rules](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/meter-rules.md) and define specific conditions (called [meter qualifiers](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/meter-rules/qualifiers.md)) based on which the visitors will be assigned to the relevant meter level.

Once Engage has established the visitors' meter level, it proceeds to check the campaign data that you customized in the [Campaigns](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/campaigns.md) tab of your Engage dashboard.

Your campaigns can consist of multiple [conversations](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/campaigns/conversations.md) pertaining to any of the three meter levels. In order to determine the conversation on the given meter level into which your visitors are to be placed, Engage needs you to specify one or several [conversation filters](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/campaigns/conversations/filters.md) (another type of Engage qualifiers).

If you have multiple conversations in a campaign and would like your visitors to move from conversation to conversation, you can achieve this by adding another type of qualifiers called [expiration types](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/campaigns/conversations/expiration-types.md) – specific factors that determine when one conversation ends and the next one begins.

Every conversation can comprise one or several [actions](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/campaigns/actions.md) – these are the specific messages (offers, paywalls, newsletter opt-ins, etc.) to be displayed on your website. For each action, you can once again specify which visitors will be targeted using a type of qualifiers called [criteria](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/campaigns/actions/who.md#criteria).

For each of your actions (e.g. newsletter subscription, registration, login, etc.), Engage provides you with a variety of [templates](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/templates.md) that can be customized according to your preferences.  

All the previously mentioned settings come together in the [Configurations](/engage/-MGi9-KKLwnWfoD36Ot6/fundamentals/configurations.md) tab on your Engage dashboard. This is the place where you can finalize and publish them to your website.

Every time the visitors refresh the page or load a new page, Engage starts the evaluation process again – in order to determine whether any of their initial characteristics have changed – and applies the relevant settings (if they exist).

## The Visitor's Lifecycle

Once your configuration has been published to the website, here is how Engage will interact with your visitors:
