Optional frames

Setting a layout frame to be optional means that it could be removed if needed to add extra space to make an over-set body text fit the layout.

In this example the one column image is set to be Optional. Setting a frame to be optional means that this frame might be removed during the elastic process if the article has an over-set (text is to long).

Setting a layout frame to be optional.

The value of the field Order decides in what order the frame should be treated in the case there are more than one optional frame in the layout.

In the example above there is a caption frame right under the image. Naturally you would like the caption frame to be removed along with the image frame. But only then. To achieve this you use a setting called Group.

Make sure that both the image frame and the caption frame belongs to the same Group. This is done simply by selecting the same number in the control and is then visualized by the fact that they are shown as grouped together in the left side list.

Two frames belonging to the same group, no 2.

If the elastic process ends up with removing an optional frame, any frames in the same group will be removed along with it.

Note that if an optional frame is empty when the elastic process starts, it will be removed (according to the setting in the rules file). This makes it possible to, for example, have fact boxes in an article layout but not making it mandatory to add text in them.
