Typical workflow in Naviga Writer

In the typical Naviga Writer+NCS Content newsroom, stories are written, edited, and published to the newsroom's web site as soon as possible. These stories may be updated for the web site during the news cycle, with images, videos, and other digital-specific enhancements added.

After the story is written and edited, a copy may be made for print publication. The NCS Content plug-in will export this print copy to the NCS Content system, where a page production editor will lay out the story using Adobe InDesign.

The following steps describe this workflow. This workflow assumes an article and photos that are ready for print publication.

NOTE: The placement of elements within your installation's Naviga Writer and Dashboard may differ from those shown in the screenshots.

Click the NCS Content tab in the Writer sidebar to get started.

Step 0: Log into NCS Content

NOTE: You will only have to perform this step one time, provided you save the NCS Content credentials in your browser. These credentials will be persistent until the you clear the browser history.

When using the plug-in for the first time, or the first time after the browser's history is cleared, you must log into NCS Content. Use your Content username (usually your initials) and your NCS Content password.

Click Login to complete the login process. When you are successfully logged in, you'll see the "Create print version" link.

NOTE: The Create Print Version link will be inactive if no story is open in the Writer. It will also be inactive until a digital version has been saved.

Generally, it will not be necessary to click the Logout button. You do not need to log out unless directed to do so by a system administrator.

Step 1: Set article's NCS Content properties

Click the Create print version link. You'll see a confirmation that the print version has been created.

The print properties for the story will appear.

NOTE: The specific properties available to set may be different for your installation from those shown in the screenshot.

The Properties fields are initially populated with your NCS Content user and/or product defaults. These may be changed as necessary. Simply select the wanted Property from the appropriate menu, or fill in the free text fields as needed.

NOTE: A Print story's properties are distinct from the Digital version's metadata. There is no mapping of metadata between the digital and print versions. Each version's metadata may be assigned and changed independently of the other.

When you are done, click the Save button. Clicking the Save button will create the version in NCS Content.

You may toggle between the digital and print stories. Click "Back to Digital Version" to return to the digital version of the story.

If you have unsaved changes, you will be prompted by the browser to save the changes or discard them before returning to the digital story.

To return to the print version, click on the NCS Content tab and click the link to the print version.
